"무리하다" 표현은 다양합니다, "무리하다"라는 단어에 집중하기보단
문맥에 맞게 "무리하다"가 어떤 의미를 내포하고 있는지를 확인해보는 것이 더 중요합니다. 

1. get carried away : 어떤 일에 심취해서 나도 모르게 지나치게 하게 되다.

I met up with some friends yesterday for drinks and we got a little carried away.

어제 친구들 만나서 술 한 잔 했는데 좀 무리했어요.

meet / meet with / meet up with  이 세 가지 표현을 굳이 비교하자면 다음과 같은 차이가 있습니다 
- meet : 누구를 처음 만난다
- meet with : 캐주얼한 만남이 아니라 업무를 위해서나 특정 주제로 의논을 하는 등의 특정 목적으로
                  누구를 만나는 상황에 어울림
- meet up with : 이미 아는 사람을 캐쥬얼한 목적으로 만난다는 이야기를 할 때 어울림

2. overdo : 인식하고 한 일이지만 판단을 잘 못해서 결과적으로 지나치게 하게 되다.
I know I've been somewhat overdoing it lately but it's December. You know how it is.
  * you know how it is  너도 알잖아.
최근에 좀 무리하고 있다는 것은 아는데.. 연말이라.. 너도 알잖아.

3. push oneself : 무엇을 이루기 위해 자신의 한계까지 올려 무리하다.
If you keep pushing yourself like that, you're going to get sick.

너 계속 그렇게 무리하다가 병난다.

4. 위험을 감수하지 말아라 : no need to
Hey, No need to rush. You're only going to save a couple of minutes no matter how fast you drive.

야 괜히 무리하지 마. 아무리 빨리 운전해도 몇 분 단축 안 돼.

 

 

[5/19] "first order of business" / "for the record" / "while we're on the subject

A: It's not going to be easy.

B: So, (the) first order of business We need to get the word out and make sure that this is on the top of 

   everyone's to-do list.
  * (the) first order of business
    가장 먼저 해야 할 것은
  * get the word out
    말을 밖으로 나가게 하다 = 모두에게 알리다

A: Right. And for the record, we're severely short-handed since Kim won't be here for the rest of the month.
  * for the record
    지금 이 자리에서 공식적으로 얘기하건대, 분명히 얘기해두는데

B: That's right. And while we're on that subject, I'd like to discuss our division of labor.
  * while we're on that subject
    그 주제에 대해 얘기하고 있는 동안에 추가하고 싶은 경우

C: Speaking of labor, do we get paid for overtime (work)?
   * Speaking of 000
     주제에 벗어날 수도 있는데, 주제로 인해서 파생적으로 생각난 경우

B: I doubt it.

C: Well, that's encouraging.
  * that's encouraging. 힘이 되네(반어법)

 

 

[5/20] 영어로 공감 표현 → 맞아! / 그러니까! / 그러게 말이다

공감을 할 때 Yeah, I know / Exactly / Absolutely / That’s right를 쓸 수 있지만 

다양한 표현을 섞어서 활용해야 자연스럽습니다. 

A: Hey! Long time no see! 
B: Yeah! It's been a while. How've you been?
A: Getting by. Learning to live with the pandemic, you know?
  * getting by 그냥 그럭저럭
    사전상으로 get by는 '어렵게 버티다'라는 의미입니다, 
    평상시 인사하는 상황에서는 "그럭저럭 지내고 있다"로 쓰입니다.

B: Aren't we all? I never thought I'd hate being at home so much.
  * Aren't we all? 
    모두가 다 같은 상황이다 / 모두가 다 같은 것을 겪고 있다. 
    의문형이지만 올려서 묻는 게 아닌, 자연스럽게 말하는 것이 좋습니다.

A: Yeah. Tell me about it. I'm just glad I don't have to work from home anymore.
  * Tell me about it 그러게 말이다
    안타깝게도 나도 그것에 대해 잘 알고 있다. / 지긋지긋할 정도로 잘 알고 있다는 뉘앙스
  * work from home
    재택근무

B: Don't I know it. I had to go through that for 2 whole months. 

  I would probably go absolutely crazy if I had to do that again.
  * Don't I know it. 잘 알지
    Tell me about it 어감과 비슷합니다

A: You can say that again. I'd probably just quit.
  * You can say that again
    우리나라의 '두말하면 잔소리다'와 비슷합니다. 
    상대방의 말이 너무나도 맞을 때 사용합니다.
